MAT PILATES
“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.” Joseph H Pilates
There are two types of Pilates classes to choose from mat or studio classes. Both are excellent forms of exercise, and you can choose the one that best suits your routine. Both are available at all levels beginners, improvers, intermediate and advanced. You can also find specialised classes such as runners, back care, pregnancy etc. in both classes.
Our mat work classes are a flexible, social, informative and fun way of learning how your body functions, transforming it into a lean well-balanced machine. Class sizes are restricted to 6 or less participants.
Courses run over 6 weeks which allows the instructor to teach you the exercises and within the class provide adequate attention to each person and their specific needs. As a beginner you will start with a medical form to highlight any injuries you may have. This simple precaution can help you prevent certain injuries from developing and ensure you are in the correct class.
If you are completely new to Pilates and particularly if you are coming on the recommendation of a practitioner (such as a physiotherapist, osteopath, sports therapist or doctor) it is recommended that you attend a 1:1 in the studio first.
YOUR PILATES SESSIONS
NEW TO PILATES?
If you are a Pilates beginner we would recommend that you arrange a one to one session to learn the key skills necessary to get the most from your classes. This will cover breathing techniques, pelvic floor, and core control. You will also learn the basics of pelvic and spinal alignment.
PILATES SESSIONS
Each session will usually be 1 hour and will cover a variety of techniques and movements for different muscle groups. Depending on the class your are signed up to these will either be mat classes using basic equipment such as spiky balls, stretch bands, small weights and gym balls. Or studio based classes using larger equipment such as the reformers, trapeze table, combo chair and ladder barrel.
WHAT TO WEAR?
You can wear whatever clothing you like to a Pilates class, although we do recommend loose comfortable clothing such as shorts, tracksuits or leggings with a t-shirt. The fewer zips, buckles and buttons you have the better as they may get in the way.
